WKC showcases its health systems research to the global community at HSR2024
As the 8th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR2024) kicks off in Nagasaki, Japan on 18 November 2024, the WHO Centre for Health Development (WKC) is ready to demonstrate its standing as a global centre of research excellence for health and long-term care systems and health emergencies. WKC is a member of the Local Organizing Committee for this year’s meeting of over 1500 participants.
On Monday, 18 November from 08:00 – 12:15, WKC Director, Dr Sarah Louise Barber will participate in a satellite session on “Advancing learning systems for health in the Asia-Pacific region through health policy and systems research (HPSR).”
Dr Barber has two roles; firstly, she will moderate a session on “What are key health systems challenges faced in the region, both new and existing?” Later she will participate in a panel discussion on “How can greater investment, uptake and impact of HPSR be achieved, including greater collaboration between institutions in the region?”
With years of experience as a researcher in the region, and her expertise as a senior WHO scientist in sustainable health financing, particularly for older populations, Dr Barber’s contributions to the session and the conference as a whole promise to be insightful and innovative.
On Wednesday, 20 November at 14:10-15:40, the Centre will host a session organized by WKC technical officer, Dr Megumi Rosenberg, on “The state of the art of measuring unmet need for healthcare: strengthening monitoring of service coverage and financial protection for UHC”. WKC conducts research on understanding unmet care need which is essential to accelerating global progress towards UHC.
This session will delve into the critical challenge of accurately measuring unmet healthcare need to enhance UHC monitoring. Experts from various WHO regions will present cutting-edge research to understand and address barriers to healthcare access and reasons for forgone care. Dr Rosenberg is excellently placed to explain what unmet healthcare needs are and why it is important to find the gaps to deliver health to those who are being left behind.
The chair of this session is an outstanding leader in global health, Dr Viroj Tangcharoensathien of the International Health Policy Program Foundation in Thailand, who is internationally renowned for his work on health systems development, UHC and health financing, and is a prolific author with over 340 publications. Joining him are Dr Mohamed Mizanur Rahman of Hitotsubashi University in Japan; Dr Paul Kowal of the Australian National University in Australia; Dr Benson Droti of the WHO Regional office for Africa, Congo; and Ms Natalia Houghton of the Pan American Health Organization in the United States of America.
Also on Wednesday, 20 November at 11:40-13:10, Dr Barber will chair a session on “Building Effective Leaders for Sustainable National and Sub-National Health Systems” which will share innovations and learnings on leadership for strengthening health systems. The session will feature Associate Professor Patricia Akweongo from the University of Ghana, Jasmine Kelly from USAID in Uganda, Nidhi Chaudhary from Vital Strategies in the Asia Pacific region, Yordanos Molla from Abt Global in Washington in the United States of America, and Ermyas Birru at the University of Washington School of Public Health in the United States.
WKC promotes innovation and research to inform global policy development for sustainable and equitable health systems.
